herpes simplex virus

Definition

1. A highly infectious virus. There are two types, virus type I and II. Type I herpes (oral herpes) is generally found on the the mouth and lips; common cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex I virus or HSV-I. Type I is much less serious then type II and is not considered an STD. Type II (genital herpes) is found more often on the genitalia. However, both viral types can cause either genital or oral infections.

2. When no type is specified, herpers refers to genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease as caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-Type II.
